Former McDonald’s chef shares why the dollar menu may never return

McDonald’s has been involved in the meal deal wars – but a former corporate chef from the Golden Arches doesn’t think it will bring back customers.

Mike Haracz, who worked at McD’s until 2019, shared on TikTok that the $5 meal will not make a profit for the company.

The $5 meal deal includes a McChicken or McDouble, a four-piece Chicken McNuggets, small fries and a small soft drink. It was only supposed to last four weeks after it was first introduced this summer, but the fast food chain has extended it in hopes of luring customers.

Haracz acknowledged that McDonald’s “will always do and only do things that are operationally easy to do.”

Because of that, Haracz said they won’t be bringing back the dollar menu — which many customers have been hoping for.

He noted that inflation and other factors contribute to why things can’t just be a dollar.

“But even though this is what people want, McDonald’s is able to try to optimize things in the restaurant,” he said. “They’d rather buy a slightly more premium item, get another one for a dollar, or the $5 package meals.”

Haracz is referring to McDonald’s recent announcement that in addition to the $5 meal deal, they will be launching a “buy one get one” option, according to CNBC.

The new McValue option will allow customers to add an additional item to any purchase for $1 — including a double cheeseburger, McChicken sandwich, six-pack and small fries, or breakfast menu items such as EG Sausage McMuffin, Sausage Biscuits or Sausage Burrito. and a hash brown.

“More people coming in and ordering a dollar thing is just going to make the drive-thru lines extra long, and they want to increase the average check of people ordering food,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s going to bring people back, because it’s not what people have been asking for.”

People in the comments agreed that the price is still too high for them to want to return to the Golden Arches.

“I stopped going to McDonald’s. For the price I can get much better food in both quality and taste,” said one.

“Delete value menu. raised prices. shrinkage components. value add menu to make you think you’re getting a deal,” wrote another.

“I stopped eating breakfast there when they stopped buying one for a dollar,” someone added.
